Widnes Weekly News
A BEATLES record originally signed and sold in Widnes has been bought at auction for more than £13,000.
The B-side of Love Me Do was signed by the fab four at Dawsons music shop in Widnes when they visited the town in 1962. It was recently put up for auction, with bidding rising to a record £13,600 – twice its estimated value.
Steve Bailey, the shop owner and Beatles expert who mounted the sale, said the band had originally decided to attend a handful of record shops for the signing and just plucked Widnes out of the air as a destination.
Steve said: ‘I don’t know why Widnes was the venue for this particular signing to be honest. They only went to three record shops on this occasion, one was in Sheffield, the other was in Liverpool – obviously – and the third was at Dawsons music shop in Widnes.
He added: ‘The girl who bought it originally had travelled to Widnes from Liverpool just to get her hands on it. She then gave it to her friend because the B-side song – PS I Love You – was her friend and her boyfriend’s favourite song.’
The record was bought at the time for the equivalent of 19p and was recently bought by a UK-based Beatles collector at an open auction held by The Beatles Store on Mathew Street.
Steve said: ‘The guy who bought it said he’d paid more for this record than he paid for his first house!’
